The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car Battery: Step by Step

In the case your Acura ‘s car battery dies on you in Richmond Hill, it’s a good idea to know how to jump start a car battery. But to properly jump-start a car, you’ll need jumper cables and the help from someone else, either from a nearby family member or friend, or from a stranger. If you don’t feel comfortable with a stranger helping you and you’re in an unfamiliar area, you always have the option to call a jump-start car service to help assist you, but this requires you to pay up. All things aside, here’s how to properly jump-start a car step-by-step with another person’s vehicle:

  1. Have the two vehicles face each other from the front, parked, and turned off. Make sure the parking brakes are off on both.
  2. Get access to the batteries by popping off their hoods. Ensure the batteries are clean and don’t have any signs of corrosion.
  3. Locate the positive and negative battery terminals, also ensuring that they are clean and not corroded.
  4. Take the stock of your cables and separate the red ends from the black ends. Be very cautious to avoid touching them, as they could spark.
  5. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal on the dead battery.
  6. Next, unwrap the battery cable and connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the car battery (the battery of the working car).
  7. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the car with the working battery,
  8. Connect the final black clamp to a grounded, unpainted metal surface on your vehicle’s frame.
  9. After everything is secure and properly connected, have the person with the working car start their car engine.
  10. Before starting up your car with the dead battery, let the other person’s car run for a while.
  11. After enough time has passed, start up your car.
  12. Once your car has been successfully jump-started, carefully take off the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on, while keeping the other vehicle running.
  13. Make sure to keep your engine running on your newly restarted vehicle for a minimum of 10 minutes to ensure that the weak battery doesn’t die right away.
  14. Once you’ve got your car up and working it is recommended that you get your car battery looked at right away.

If you find that your car won’t jump start at all, unfortunately, you’ll have to call roadside assistance to have your car towed and fixed up elsewhere.
