Southern Motors began its long and respected
history among automobile dealers over 75 years ago when its founder, Julius
Kaminsky, recognized the essential role automobiles would play in the lives of
his friends and neighbors in the Savannah area. Being one of nine children,
Julius understood the importance of hard work and strong family commitment. As
a young man not financially able to open his own dealership but wanting to help
his parents support the family, Julius began his automobile career the hard
way--by driving his one car, a Nash, to Jacksonville, Florida, where his first
customers lived.
It took many long days and several years of dedication to his dream
before Julius could open the doors of his own dealership, Southern Motors, on
Broughton Street in downtown Savannah, Georgia. Julius was committed to making
Southern Motors a place where his business values would be reflected in the
positive experience of his customers and employees. Quality products and
attentive customer service were the hallmark of a Southern Motors
sale.
During the initial decades of operation, Southern Motors represented
Nash, which, through various corporate mergers and sales, later became Rambler
and then American Motors/Jeep. Of these manufacturers, only Jeep remains,
making Southern Motors the world's oldest active Jeep dealer. Regardless of the
product sold, however, Southern Motors' commitment to the customer remained
constant.
Through its reputation for customer satisfaction and loyalty,
Southern Motors became the first Honda automobile franchisee in coastal
Georgia. Although he never desired or anticipated relocating Southern Motors,
the company's growth and the addition of a third franchise, Acura, required such
a move. In 1987, Southern Motors moved its Honda and Jeep franchises into a new
dealership in the heart of Savannah's rapidly growing South side. This was soon
followed by the renovation of Southern Motors on Broughton Street to accommodate
the Acura line. But the growth of the Southern Motors family of dealerships did
not stop there. In June of 1994, a full-line Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership,
Springfield Chrysler Auto Mart, was established in Springfield,
Georgia, and, in the late 1990's, a dealership specializing in late model, used
cars, Rincon Select Automotive Sales, began operation
in Rincon, Georgia.
All of this expansion was possible because Julius's children (sons
Jay, Myron and Danny, and daughter Toby) and grandchildren (Myron's sons Adam
and Ross) shared his vision and made Southern Motors a family business. They
are active owner-operators who work diligently to ensure that the tradition of
excellence begun so long ago continues today.
Everyday, the Southern Motors family of dealerships strives to
maintain the legacy and standards of quality, customer service and honest values
established by its founder, Julius Kaminsky, over 75 years ago. |
